Author John L. Stephens, an early American adventurer and one of the first foreign "explorers" to arrive in the Mayan region of centrol America, recounted discovering a handprint during demolition work at Uxmal in the 1840s. In his novel "Incidents of Travel in the Yucatan," his story reads as follows: "Over the cavity left in the mortar by the removal of the stone were two conspicuous marks, which afterward stared us in the face in all the ruined buildings of the country. They were the prints of a red hand with the thumb and fingers extended, not drawn or painted, but stamped by the living hand, the pressure of the palm upon the stone. He who made it had stood before it alive as we did, and pressed his hand, moistened with red paint, hard against the stone." (Image Credit: Michelle Williamson, Ideum)

Sunrise at Uxmal: On the day when the Sun passes through the zenith, directly overhead, it is also seen to rise directly across the diagonal of the Nunnery Quadrangle. At Uxmal, Mexico, a tapered stone marker in front of the Pyramid of the Magician casts a minimum shadow when the Sun reaches the zenith—the point directly overhead. Aerial photograph of the archeological site of Uxmal in Yucatán, México. The Mayan name is derived from ox that means three, and mal that refers to the number of times work is repeated.
